175: The Science of the Good Life

Emiliya Zhivotovskaya, founder of The Flourishing Center (which offers a certificate in applied positive psychology), discusses the science behind positive psychology. Emiliya and I discuss the following topics:

  • How research can be “me”-search

  • How to add mindfulness to a meal

  • Overcoming bulimia and loving her body

  • The science of well-being

  • How physical pain is different from social pain and what happens to the body

  • How learned helplessness has turned into learned hopefulness

  • Activity hacks, such as desk bikes, standing desks, vibration plates, pull-up bars, meditation cushions, and massage balls can help “energize the brain”

Serena Marie, RD, shares how bulletproof coffee consists of coffee, medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil (or coconut oil), and grass-fed butter blended together. Benefits include the following:

  1. Coffee beans provide powerful antioxidants, and caffeine suppresses appetite.

  2. Coconut oil/MCT helps upregulate fat burning instead of sugar burning.

  3. Grass-fed butter contains vitamins A, D, K, and healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Serena prefers eating a diet that is more balanced, and since bulletproof coffee is a high-calorie option that does not provide vitamins/minerals from vegetables and is protein poor, she does not think it’s a healthy, daily choice.
