208: Mental Health and Mindfulness

There can be a lot of stigma around mental health, and in an effort to educate people across the United States, Mental Health America has dedicated the month of May to this subject since 1949. During my special series of Mental Health Awareness Monday episodes, I’ll share scientifically proven tools that can help people with depression and/or anxiety. I specifically discuss the following:

  • Why The Running Lifestyle Show took a sabbatical due to a concussion that I sustained during a car accident in April

  • The difference between mindfulness and meditation

  • Two simple, but not necessarily easy, mindfulness exercises

  • The power of tapping into your five senses so that you can be in the present moment

  • Why not to believe everything you think

  • What the saying “be where your feet are” means

  • How the Philadelphia Eagles used mindfulness to win their first-ever Super Bowl in February 2018

  • How, if you’re having a hard time, to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255

  • 7 Cups of Tea, which is a wonderful company dedicated to providing a safe, online space for people to chat with therapists and/or people who have been through tough times and want to lend a listening ear

My Flourishing Skills and Accountability groups will offer a time to come together with kindred spirits and learn how to apply scientifically proven skills to increase your positivity ratio. Groups begin June 5, 2018, and will run (pun intended) for six weeks. These are intimate groups where you get to learn and apply skills among a safe, welcoming, small group of people.
