241: Running for Joy

It’s so easy to get focused on numbers and forget about what really makes you happy. What creates joy and meaning for you? Agapi Stassinopoulos,  author of Wake Up to the Joy of You: 52 Meditations and Practices for a Calmer, Happier Life (our December 2018 Book of the Month) shared so much wisdom when we sat down in her NYC apartment and discussed multiple ways to feel better.

Agapi is an actress and best-selling author and speaker who inspires audiences around the world to embrace radical self-care. Her books Gods and Goddesses in Love and Conversations with the Goddesses were turned into PBS Specials.

Agapi conducts workshops with Thrive Global, the enterprise founded by her sister Arianna Huffington to end our epidemic of stress and burnout. What makes Agapi so special is the deep sense of connection she creates with people, no matter who they are.

During our time together, sitting on her couch and recording this episode, we discussed:

  • How to get your running mojo back.

  • What gets some people going.

  • How to handle happiness when the people around you are struggling.

  • How to tap into your inner joy.

  • The best running movie ever.

Serena Marie, RD, and I discuss:

  • The emerging research on how prebiotics (what the bacteria in your colon eat) and probiotics (the different strains of bacteria) affect our health and our weight.

  • Fecal transplants are becoming mainstream now. A transplant takes bacteria from a healthy person and puts it into the colon of a sick person to help them beat infections.

  • A nutrition-based approach is becoming accepted as part of common practice, such as the Low FODMAP Diet (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols) becoming a common recommendation for those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, or that doctors are acknowledging that Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth is a real issue that needs to be treated.

  • Other exciting developments in the nutrition scene for 2019 include lots of cool research on sports nutrition, such as how carb-timing can improve endurance performance.
