46: Kathrine Switzer

We’ve all heard that to keep your content evergreen, you shouldn’t date your material so you can use it any time you choose. I dreamed of talking with Kathrine Switzer for years, so when I knew I would be interviewing her days before Thanksgiving, I had to make her our Thanksgiving episode.

Kathrine explains her experience of how she worked tirelessly to have women legally run the Boston Marathon and to prove that women had the strength and stamina to run the marathon distance. Through years of lobbying and putting on women’s races all over the world, Kathrine became a driving force to have the women’s marathon be an official Olympic sport.

Kathrine and I talk about:

  • Her dad’s words of wisdom that changed her life

  • What you need to do to start running (it’s kind of obvious but needs to be said)

  • The feeling of running a distance farther than you ever had before

  • How to get an autographed copy of her book, Marathon Woman

  • The coach who helped Kathrine make history

  • When life gives you lemons, how to make lemonade

  • What running has given Kathrine

  • What the 261 Movement is all about

  • How Kathrine is STILL creating opportunities for women

We then transition to our favorite RD, Serena Marie, RD, and talk about how to eat and what to do on Thanksgiving. We also answer a listener’s question about how to handle comments that are negative about what you’re eating. I love Serena’s response and her mantra. She’s too funny. Oh, and you also hear some useless knowledge about my high school marching band.

Serena and I talked a lot about a fat-adapted diet, so it would only be fitting to have our listener of the week share how he lost over 100 pounds on a fat-adapted diet and how he’s now starting to run. You don’t want to miss Trey Beuchamp’s amazing story of how a fat-adapted diet and the power of podcasts can change lives. You can find out his top tips to being fat-adapted here.

I have a special announcement at the end you don’t want to miss. And if you haven’t done so already, please find out the 5 Must Have Tools Before You Go Another Mile. You’ll be subscribed to my email newsletter and receive updates and access to special promotions.

Thank you for being on this journey with me. Happy Thanksgiving.
