155: Running While Pushing a Wheelchair

This episode is about taking something tragic, surviving, being inspired by others, and adapting your life plans.

Jamie Parks’s life changed in a heartbeat, when his fiancée Lynn was in a horrific accident. Lynn miraculously survived a traumatic brain injury, a lacerated liver, and broken bones. Through the years, Jamie has pushed Lynn in her custom-made racing wheelchair in the Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and Toronto Marathon. In over 25 years, they have run 25,000 miles together.

The entire Parks family—husband Jamie, wife Lynn, and their daughter Annalyn—share how their running has evolved over the years. During the interview, Jamie discussed how Dick and Rick Hoyt inspired him to start running and pushing Lynn, how being a mail carrier helps him as a runner, his experiences training for a spring marathon while living in the Chicago area, and his experience with running streaks.

We also talk with Annalyn, who shares how running has evolved for her and what it looks like today as a high school senior preparing for college.

A new sponsor of The Running Lifestyle Show, Vacation Planner Tom, runs by to share the differences between running a race at Disney World versus running a race at Disneyland. There are quite a few differences, and it sounds like Disney World holds races that feel like major city marathons, while Disneyland puts on more of a smaller city race experience in terms of logistics.

Serena Marie, RD, discusses a study from the Journal of Internal Medicine, which did a randomized control 1-year study on 115 subjects (all obese, type 2-diabetic adults) comparing low-carb and low-fat diets that showed an equal weight loss in both groups! The take-home message is to find what works for you.

We discuss how it’s human nature to find research that supports your beliefs and the “holy grail” term of The Running Lifestyle Show, which is every body is different. Always listen to your body!
