158: Navy SEAL Training, Running, and the MCM with Jeff Webb

Former Navy SEAL Jeff Webb explains what happens at SEAL training and why he loves the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) so much during a recent walk with me through Washington, DC. We discuss the brotherhood that the SEALs have and specifically how he convinced his swim buddy, Scott, to run the MCM twenty years after they initially ran it. You’ll hear interesting stories of how the two swim buddies relied on each other to live; Jeff also explains why he started co-founded a charity, Run to Honor, which honors US Naval Academy alumni who died in combat or military operations.

Jeff and I talked after the MCM, and you’ll hear about how he qualified for Boston (again) and his experience of being stopped by a train at the LeHigh Marathon earlier this year. If you’re looking to run the MCM someday, you’ll want to consider running with Run to Honor. Jeff shares the fundraising requirements (just $75!) and some of the people he has run for. Not looking to run the MCM, but want to be a part of Run to Honor? Head over to runtohonor.com to view a list of Naval Academy graduates for which you can run. You may be struggling to go for a run someday, and the idea of running for someone who has lost his or her life serving the United States could get you out the door.

Serena Marie, RD’s talk about why it’s so important to be mindful when eating deserved a re-run. You’ll hear again how having silence (or a calm conversation with a friend) while sitting down—plus eating slowly—can make a difference in your digestion and on your parasympathetic nervous system.
