205: Gratitude, Garbage, and the “No Garbage Trucks” Pledge

Prepare for liftoff! If you’re feeling blue and need a pick me up, then you’ve come to the right place. David J. Pollay, author of The Law of the Garbage Truck: How to Respond to People Who Dump on You and How to Stop Dumping on Others, is here to help you spread kindness in the world. Pollay’s book has been translated into 13 languages, shared with over 500 million people around the world, and people in over 100 countries have taken the “No Garbage Trucks” pledge.

Our go-to, real-food dietitian, Serena Marie, RD, and I discuss how to handle negative reviews, her thoughts on the latest research around cancer and asparagus, and what questions she would ask an ultra runner who has recently given up meat, is gaining weight, and is constantly hungry.

David Pollay and I specifically discuss the following:

  • Why Lambeau Field is the “Mecca”

  • What prompted him to write his book

  • How to know when you are in a gratitude cycle versus a garbage cycle

  • How to let garbage pass you by

  • When to use the Law of the Garbage Truck and when it’s not useful

  • What happens when you try to get the “dirt” on someone

  • What happened when his tea spilled all over a businessman’s jacket

  • The big lessons his dad taught him that he now shares with the world

  • How to communicate to facilitate change and growth

Serena Marie, RD, and I discuss the following:

  • A Russian spa that made Serena happy and relaxed

  • Super kind and not-so-kind iTunes reviews

  • Why she’s upset with the way recent research about cancer and asparagus was portrayed in The Guardian

  • Her “issues” regarding studies done on rodents

  • Her recommendations for a hungry ultra runner
