224: Values-Based Goal Setting

‘Tis the season to set goals, fa la la la la, la la la la. September is known as the second January, fa la la la la, la la la la. Now it’s time to take your VIA (Values in Action Questionnaire) fa la la la la, la la la, if you want to make your goals happen, then go ahead and align them with your strengths, fa la la la la, la la la la (sung to the song, “Deck the Halls”).

On today’s short run episode, I share the science behind how to set goals that align with your values:

  • What happens when your goals aren’t aligned with your values

  • Why comparison is a losing game, and if you insist on comparing yourself to others, why to make it realistic (don’t compare yourself to Deena Kastor!)

  • How to focus your goals by picking a particular category

  • Why achieving goals is huge for your confidence (Hint: credibility is the name of the game!)

  • What SMART goals are (Specific, Meaningful, Adaptive/Approach, Realistic, and Time-Framed)

  • Examples of how I plan on strengthening family goals

  • How science has proven that having a coach will get you to your goals sooner and make you feel more empowered

The Runner of the Week, Rene’ Kougel shares the following:

  • How shocked and amazed she was when she completed her first 5K

  • How she kept on running, built her base, and ran her first marathon in 2017

  • Why running a marathon for charity gave her running more meaning

  • How she got through the Chicago Marathon after hitting the wall at Mile 6

  • Why she facilitates and also participates in Flourishing Skills groups

Can you believe we’re in the last third of the year?! If you’re feeling like you have more to achieve this year and want to learn and grow with kindred spirits, then the Flourishing Skills groups could be for you. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the science of positive psychology and apply strategies in real time from the comfort of your own home (via Zoom).

The next group starts on Thursday, October 4 and runs (pun intended) for a total of ten sessions over eleven weeks. (We don’t meet on Thanksgiving.) Registration is now open and closes on Friday, September 28. Space is limited. Please email me at kari@therunninglifestyle.com for more information.
