51: Helen Samson Mullen

*****ATTENTION PLEASE: ********* This is a different type of episode. Next week we’ll go back to standard programming.*********

Looking to accomplish A LOT in 2015 and have some crazy audacious goals? I have a tool for you to make those goals become a reality! Listen in to hear Helen Samson Mullen, PHD, an executive and life coach who has been trained by Martha Beck and Brene Brown, share how vision boards can help you achieve and succeed in your goals.

Helen explains what a vision board is, how to use it, and what can happen from it. Back on November 15, 2013 (just to be exact), I attended a vision board workshop Helen lead. During Helen’s segment, we use my board as a way to show the power of what/who/how a vision board can bring in to your life. Helen is a class act and highly educated and beautifully weaves in theories and studies throughout our discussion of brining vision boards to life.

We discuss:

  • What is a vision board

  • How NOT to limit ourselves with our thinking

  • The 5 Star Panoramic buckets of well-being

  • The Gallup Strengths Finder to find out your strengths and know how/when to use your "super powers"

  • Values in Action Survey of Character Strengths questionnaire and what values you hold morally at the top

  • How these two tests can help you make better decisions that are in line with your strengths and values

  • Having different strengths in a team to make it function successfully

  • How many positive interactions we need to cancel out negative thoughts

  • What two feelings Brene Brown recommends to have together to optimize your positive thoughts

  • What saying I say multiple times to receive the gift of imperfection

We’re really mixing this episode up when we have our favorite RD, Serena Marie, RD, talk about how to handle New Year's resolutions. Serena comes on first, which I think is the first time and is only proper since it’s the first day of the first month of the year. We each discuss what our vision word/mantra is for 2015. Perhaps we’ll have to play a drinking game (with water of course – this is the Running Lifestyle Show after all), where whenever you hear Serena’s word of the year, my word of the year, or YOUR word of the year, you drink some water.

Our Runner of the Week (formally Listener of the Week) is Helena Bouchez, who is my ADHD sister besides MANY other things. Helena shares how she is starting slowly with running and what it has brought into her life. Helena is doing exactly what we recommend here at the Running Lifestyle Show, which is "less is MORE!" And as Runner of the Week, Helena is able to choose a BANDIwear belt of her choice. Lucky girl!

Then, Ms. Helen Samson Mullen talks all things vision boards.

The “caboose” of the episode is Vinnie Tortorich, trainer to the stars, discussing his mantra and other Vinnie “stuff”. Last month Vinnie talked about the importance of runners getting in to the gym to do arm work. I’m happy to say that I have been in the gym three times in December to work on my arms. I share with Vinnie a physical goal I have for the year and Vinnie agrees it is a good one.

How about joining us for our Mantra for 2015 Challenge? What is that, you may be wondering? Well, so glad you asked! Pick a word as your vision for the year and incorporate it somehow in to your day, every day in January. It could be as simple as writing that word down. Or, perhaps reading that word and reminding yourself to live that word. Or, when you’re having a challenging time, to repeat that word.

Part of the challenge is to receive two to three emails a week with an inspiring quote, a fitness tip, or a nutrition tidbit from Serena Marie, RD. You never know what positive words and inspiration will hit your mailbox. My intention with this challenge is that when you see an email in your inbox from the Running Lifestyle Show, you see it as sunshine to your eyes.

Our first book in The Running Lifestyle Book Club is Go Wild: Free Your Body and Mind from the Afflictions of Civilization by John J. Ratey and Richard Manning.

Just like our 12 Days of Christmas Challenge, we’ll have some prizes from our friends Beth and Bev over at BANDIwear as an extra bonus to complete the challenge. We’ll incorporate the challenge into the Running Lifestyle Show Facebook Group. Not in the group? No problem, just click here and I’ll get you in. You do have connections after all. :-)
