75: Optimize Your Brain with Dr. John Ratey, Part 2

Dr. Ratey and I had so much to share that his interview was split in to two parts. During the second part of Dr. Ratey’s interview, we discussed:

  • Why injuries can be especially hard on runners

  • Why people become so close to people they exercise with

  • Running with his friend who is part of the US World Team of Triathletes

  • What stickiness is and why it’s important

  • What’s going on in Naperville, IL and how it’s being replicated around the world

  • The amazing results the state of Texas has had thanks to fitness

  • What happens to your brain when you see something on Facebook

  • Why we’re sleep deprived

  • Brain studies are now focusing on the ability to be plastic

  • There is an integrated approach going on in health

Our Runner of the Week, Rhonda Foulds, is a perfect example to the power of exercise, and speaks directly to what Dr. Ratey discussed. Rhonda shares:

  • Being diagnosed in 1999 with Parkinson’s and undergoing brain surgery in 2009

  • Gaining 100 pounds in 10 years

  • How she started running

  • Believing in herself that she could run a 5K after losing 25 pounds

  • Running the Boston to Big Sur Marathon Challenge

  • She pinches herself everyday that through the gift of running, she has been able to get off of 33 medications for her Parkinson’s

  • Who it’s up to get out the door and run

  • The impact her three boys have had on her running journey and how she has shared the gift of running with her family

  • It’s mental over physical

  • Start by taking small bites

Our Go To Real Food Dietitian, Serena Marie, RD discusses Niacin. Here is what Serena has to share:

A recent randomized, controlled study with a population size of 357 participants is suggesting that daily supplementation with 500 mg of niacin has been associated with decreased occurrence of non-melanoma skin cancers (i.e. basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas). Given that niacin (vitamin B3) is a water soluble vitamin, inexpensive and toxicity of this vitamin is very difficult to incur, Serena Marie RD feels supplementation is a good idea for those of us who are prone to sunburn. Serena likes the Standard Process Brand (she uses Standard Process' 550mg Niacinamide supplement). Do not use this information to treat/prevent/cure disease or in place of a medical provider's recommendations. Do not consume >3000mg of niacin (vitamin B3) daily.

Serena and I also discuss our latest news about our fundraising efforts to run the Chicago and NYC Marathons for Action for Healthy Kids. Action for Healthy Kids makes healthy school breakfast and lunch programs available to students across the country. In addition, AFHK, provides much need fitness equipment to help keep the kids active. We know how important this is after hearing Dr. Ratey.

For the Month of June, we are offering the first three people who contribute $100, an hour with Serena Marie, RD, to go over your nutrition goals. In addition, everyone who donates in June will be entered in to a raffle to spend 30 minutes with Serena and me over Skype. We can talk about food, running, business, whatever.

For every $25 you donate, you’ll receive a ticket for our raffle. The raffle will be drawn on Sunday, September 27th. Just to make things even more special, every $50 you donate gives you the opportunity to dedicate a mile in either Chicago or NYC and either to Serena or Kari. First come first served for your special mile (s). :-)

If you would like to join us in helping bring healthy food and physical equipment in to schools with great need, please check out:

Phew, that was a lot!!!!!!

Serena and I review the Moji Foot Pro and Mini Pro. Wow!!!! These products are great. In fact, I am rolling my foot right now as I type. Serena is a huge fan of both products and so I am.

Moji recovery products have industrial plastic with rolling balls that you can roll over your body and target specific points of pain. In fact, the pro products consist of metal balls that you can put in the freezer and get extra cold. They’re portable and you can even put them in your beach bag, as Serena pointed out.

The mini pro gives me the ability to really target a sore area. I especially like this for my IT Band, which is where I usually get injured. Serena especially likes to stand directly on the foot pro directly. You can easily multitask while you’re using both products. Serena and I really like the ability to be able to use the products on the subway, in a car, etc. after a marathon. Moji Products are made in the Chicago area.

Thank you Dr. Robert Rosenberg, of Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day, for having me on your podcast, the Positive Talk Radio Network. It was an honor to be on the show and discuss running and sleeping. In addition, it was great to talk in depth about my night terrors and understand how/why they are happening.
