217: Deena Kastor and Running Your Mind

Celebrate good times, come on, it’s a celebration! We’re celebrating at The Running Lifestyle Show, because not only has it been four years since the launch of the podcast, but also Deena Kastor—YES—Deena Kastor is on the podcast! Deena just wrote her first book, and it’s AH-mazing! And her audiobook is the bomb.com. You would think that Deena is a voiceover artist with her incredible narration skills.

Deena earned a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens in the marathon distance, has won the Chicago and London Marathons, and holds the women’s masters marathon record.

We had a really nice conversation about the highs and lows of her career. We specifically discuss the following:

  • How she met her husband, how he proposed, and the beautiful wedding weekend they had

  • What Coach Vigh instilled in her to show up with a good attitude

  • How she handled one of her running groups “turning” on her

  • What she recommends for a runner who is past his or her fastest times and how to set goals

  • Her proudest race

  • The Chicago and New York City Marathon courses

  • Her daughter’s food palette (this will probably shock you!)

  • How to meet her

Serena Marie, RD, and I keep the party going when we discuss the highlights of podcasting for four years! We of course discuss what’s good, Serena’s take on Deena’s interview, and her algae wisdom.

This is what Serena had to say about my interview with Deena:

  • Totally obsessed! She is such a force of inspiration and good in this world.

  • I have so much respect for the way she explained the story about being teased. She took a painful moment and told us how she grew from it without criticizing those who bullied her.

  • Her daughter was the cutest ever when I met her . . . and I think she’s the coolest kid ever for loving fish eggs and sushi!

Serena discusses the following during her nutrition segment:

  • Algae is a bioavailable source of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduces inflammation in the body.

  • Regular intake of algae (and other foods that contain nitric oxide, such as kale or beets) may help reduce blood pressure and help you run longer/harder without feeling fatigued! This is because nitric oxide dilates blood vessels in the body and helps deliver oxygen more efficiently to muscles.

  • I recommend using Maine Coast Seaweed Flakes on your scrambled eggs in the morning or using Nori Seaweed Sheets to make low-carb wraps.
