218: Permission to Be Human

The “short run” episodes are back by popular demand! You can now look forward to a short episode one week (a.k.a. the short run), followed by a longer episode (a.k.a the long run) the next! Runner of the Week, also known as Flourishing Skills group family member Tom, stops by on this episode.

In this episode I discuss the following:

  • The goal of the positive psychology movement

  • How to give yourself permission to be human

  • Jill Bolte Taylor’s book, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, and what she explains as the 90-second rule. She says directly in her book, “Once triggered, the chemical released by my brain surges through my body and I have a physiological experience. Within 90 seconds from the initial trigger, the chemical component of my anger has completely dissipated from my blood and my automatic response is over. If, however, I remain angry after those 90 seconds have passed, then it is because I have chosen to let that circuit continue to run.”

  • What the “circle of life” is and how it relates to mind-body medicine

  • How to ask for forgiveness after you’ve majorly screwed up (I share a story that I am definitely not proud of) and how I used #permissiontobehuman to overcome guilt and not go to “shameland”

  • How to use Buddha’s suggestion, “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”

Tom from the United Kingdom joins us and shares the following:

  • How he uses running to get to work

  • Why he’s always on the lookout to learn additional tools

  • How savoring has made a difference in his life

  • What excites him about the ripple effect when it comes to flourishing

  • How your way of being can make a difference in the world

If you feel like you’re running, running, and running, and your life seems to be slipping by, you may want to take a forced time-out.

My Flourishing Skills groups will give you an opportunity to learn the science of positive psychology and apply strategies in real time from the comfort of your own home. We’ll be meeting with kindred spirits via a free conferencing program called Zoom in September. The next group will run for ten weeks.
