227: Running Away from a Cult

Folks talk about cults everywhere from People Magazine, to The Today Show with Megyn Kelly, and now on The Running Lifestyle Show. Lisa Kohn, the author of To the Moon and Back: A Childhood Under the Influence—also November’s Book of the Month—shares how being raised in a cult has impacted her own life, family, and professional contacts.

We discuss the following:

  • What a cult is and isn’t

  • What she believed in being a part of the Unification Church

  • What led Lisa to leave the Unification Church

  • What her journey with depression, anorexia, and a cocaine addiction was like

  • How she makes sure not to become obsessed with numbers when it comes to running and why

  • How to learn and practice self-compassion

  • How rigid thinking can get in her way

  • Why not to put people on pedestals

Serena Marie, RD, discusses the following during her nutrition segment, and we also discuss what’s good:

Serena’s Top-Three Cooking Oils

  1. Avocado Oil: This is a heat-stable source of monounsaturated fat that is very heart healthy and anti-inflammatory, similar to the fat in olive oil. Remember to use olive oil only for cold-application.

  2. Grass-Fed Ghee or Butter: Ghee does not contain lactose and is great for those who do not tolerate dairy. Both fats are heat stable and contain vitamins D and A and omega-3 fatty acids (the same “superfood” fat found in salmon).

  3. Coconut Oil: Often praised as the healthiest food out there, coconut oil is great because of its heat stability, but its saturated fat content has a more neutral effect on health rather than boosting health. It does contain medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which may help with those who are trying to get into ketosis or athletes who rely on fat stores for fuel. Some data suggests that MCT improves insulin sensitivity.
