231: You Matter Marathon™: No Running Required

Most people want to feel seen and heard, right? Research shows that helping others may reduce the effects of stress. Today’s guest, Cheryl Rice, shares how someone can take an idea, take himself or herself out of that idea, and create connection and love between perfect strangers via the You Matter Marathon™ (YMM).

According to http://youmattermarathon.com, the YMM involves individuals or organizations who sign up to receive thirty You Matter cards in the mail (free of charge). Participants are invited to join a private Facebook group to connect with other You Matter Marathoners. By participating in the YMM, participants agree to share their thirty You Matter cards during November, and they receive weekly emails sharing YMM progress and inspiring stories.

Serena Marie, RD, explains how fat and sugar give a dopamine rush and how science supports why you could crave more fat and sugar two hours after eating it. Serena and I also discuss relationships, feelings, and how they affect food choices. Serena chats about her amazing trip to Paris, and I talk about my recent trip to Orlando.

Cheryl and I discuss the following:

  • How Cheryl ran her bucket-list half marathon and how it challenged her mental model

  • What Cheryl’s running routine looks like today

  • How the moment she had with a woman at a grocery store who was really struggling financially created the YMM

  • Cheryl’s goal of having YMM participants give out two million cards in 2018, and why it matters

  • How people receive more when they give the You Matter cards out, rather than receiving them

  • Why YMM participants’ You Matter cards are free, and specifically why the cards are designed the way they are

  • How to give the cards anonymously, to family members, and to strangers (there are so many easy ways to go about this)

  • How this is a “Happy Habit,” and how it can help you now, especially in these dark months

  • Why telling other people they matter matters

  • How groups and organizations can participate in the YMM

  • How Cheryl went from self-financing the YMM project during the first year to creating a non-profit

  • How Cheryl helps women quiet their inner self-critics
