232: Mel Robbins’ 5 Second Rule

Sometimes we just don’t feel like doing things. In a funny way, we actually feel good about putting something off. There is a way though to outsmart your brain to take action. It’s called the 5 Second Rule, and it’s not the 5-second food rule! It’s the 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins, which is also the title of her book, The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage.

On today’s short run episode, I share the following:

  • What the 5 Second Rule is

  • How to go about it (Hint: Count down backward from 5)

  • Why it works

  • When to use it

  • What my experience has been with using it—one way that I started using it was to start handing out You Matter cards in person (we talked about the You Matter Marathon™: No Running Required on last week’s episode)

The Runner of the Week, Sarah Baker Andrus, shares the following:

  • How in the beginning, running was a way to keep her weight down in her 40s

  • How it involved running two half marathons in big gambling cities (Atlantic City and Las Vegas)

  • Why she isn’t running as much now, and how she has reframed what running is to her

  • How she counsels her career coaching clients to make sure they are taking care of themselves from a physical and mental perspective
