235: Priming Your Way to Success

Happy Thanksgiving, if you’re reading this on Thanksgiving! It’s such a special time to tap into all of the beautiful people and things that are in our lives.

Today’s episode aligns perfectly with the holiday. Zeev Ben-Shachar—a speaker, student of psychology, and former college squash player—shares how being in the present makes the mundane more meaningful. While we give thanks on Thanksgiving, what if we could be in awe of the good every day?

We discuss the following:

  • How meditation and visualization helped prepare him for squash matches

  • What training a squash player needs

  • The importance of asking yourself, “What if I don’t complete this goal?” when setting a goal

  • How to set up a plan for your goal, because having inspiration alone doesn’t (most of the time) achieve your goal

  • How sentence completions can make all of the difference

  • What different types of primers are and what they can do for you

  • How to make the mundane meaningful

  • Why to look to children for inspiration and to look at things through children’s eyes

Serena and I discuss how to stay in control of your holiday happiness:

  1. Ask your loved ones not to comment on your appearance or food choices. Send a text or call a loved one whom you suspect may make a comment, and kindly ask him or her to not make any comments about your food or appearance. You can pretend that you’ve asked everyone at dinner so that he or she doesn’t feel like you singled him or her out!

  2. Keep your eyes on your own plate! Likewise, make sure you do not pass judgment on other’s food choices. Do not preach. Holidays are for enjoying, savoring, and spreading love.

  3. Have a plan. Look at your calendar, and consider how many upcoming parties you have. Think about how you’ll feel if you indulge at every party and whether it’s worth it to you. If not, choose some parties to indulge at, and simply say no at others!

  4. I (Kari) bring up a great point that other’s comments about what you’re eating (or not eating) are a reflection of their own inner insecurities. Don’t let anyone bully you! You’re in control.
