267: Select a Theme, Not Goals

How many times have you set a goal, reached it, and afterwards thought, “That’s it?” Or maybe you did feel that feeling you wanted, but it quickly disappeared? Or maybe by setting the goal, it took you on a route that didn’t reflect what you thought you wanted, but what you should do based on what society says.

That’s why it’s time to set a theme rather than a goal.

On today’s podcast episode, I’ll discuss:

  • Setting a theme about who you are instead of what you are

  • How to set a theme based your 2019 reflections and your bucket list

  • Reflection questions you may ask yourself:

    • How have you become an even better person?

    • Who benefits from you being “you” in the world?

    • What doesn’t feel so good when you think about 2019? And do you feel that way because “society says” or is it really how you feel? Do you need to forgive yourself and/or others? Could writing a forgiveness letter help you?

    • Who has come into your life and what have they brought to you? As Charlie Gilkey, guest of Episode 252, asks: Are they mentors, peers, supporters, and/or benefactors?

    • What’s working for you?

    • How do you want to do better?

    • What and/or who do you want to bring into your life and why?

  • Where you can use your theme in the different areas of your life:

    • Relationships (Family, Friends, and Partner/Spouse)

    • Health

    • Career

    • Fun

    • Creativity

    • Finances

    • Community (in-person or online)

    • Pace of Your Life (are you constantly wondering where the time went?)

    • Your Physical Environment

    • Spirituality

    • Curiosity

  • How to Prime Yourself so your theme is at the forefront of your year

  • Why my theme is “Self-Compassion for Kari”

If you’ve felt frustration, shame, or sadness over goals not reached or not as fulfilling as you thought, why not give a theme a try this year? Please let me know your theme by reaching out HERE, HERE and/or HERE!
